Using Jamii.one’s digital ledger builds a credit score and digital identity for access to life-changing opportunities

Serkalem needed money that she and her saving community did not have

Serkalem was struggling to keep her food shop afloat after the impacts of COVID-19.

Thanks to Jamii.one, she received the loan she needed from the formal financial sector and used it to change her inventory and save her business.

Build a credit score

When saving communities use the Jamii.one app, they replace their paper ledger with a digital ledger and build a credit score.

The ledger is a history of each member’s credit. It includes the loans held by each member, the duration of each loan, and whether repayments are made on time.

Create a digital identity

When saving communities use the Jamii.one app, each member creates a unique digital identity.

Not only is proof of identity a requirement for accessing financial services, but it is also often required for accessing healthcare, social protection, education, and beyond.

Serkalem’s first formal loan turned her business around

Serkalem Alem lives in rural Ethiopia with her young son. She runs a small business, selling coffee in her village’s marketplace. After COVID-19, she struggled to keep her business afloat and needed a loan to buy new inventory.

When faced with difficult times, Serkalem usually turns to her saving community for a small loan. But the loan she needed to save her business was bigger than the one her saving community could provide.

Serkalem’s saving community had built a credit history and digital identity using Jamii.one’s app. This meant that Jamii.one could give them access to loans from Metemamen MFI. For the first time in her life, Serkalem was eligible for a loan from the formal financial sector. This loan was specially designed for someone like her: it was easy to repay, with minimal risk thanks to a very low interest rate, and relied on group collateral instead of individual collateral.

She used her loan to buy the materials she needed to sell coffee and save her business. Now equipped with a traditional coffee set and coffee in bulk, Serkalem’s expanded business started attracting more customers. Thanks to rising sales, she is able to recover from the economic impacts of COVID-19. And since she invested her loan in income-generating activity, she is already repaying it without difficulty.
